Applicants need to meet the entry requirements, such as particular subjects or grades, for a course, but they can ignore any points that may have been published for any offers made in a previous round. Existing CAO applicants can apply free of charge, while for anyone who has not already applied to the CAO, the fee is €45. Private colleges can be a good option for students who have not already made a college application.

Luckily, one of her aunts stepped in and persuaded her to apply for intellectual disability (ID) nursing. Her aunt is an intellectual disability nurse herself and knew how rewarding the job could be. “I can honestly say it is the best decision I ever made,” says Jade. Jade (21) says “nursing always seemed a natural choice for me”. As well as her aunt who persuaded her to pursue ID nursing, she has another aunt who is also a nurse. “To me nursing is about giving people support when they are in need.

While history was his CAO choice, in his earlier post-primary years at Gort Community School, Brendan believed he might pursue at career in IT. He sought out and enjoyed transition year work experiences exploring IT in a very hands-on way, “but I realised it was not something I felt enough passion about”.

The nature of the exams and the courses for which they can pave the way for entry vary between colleges. Below is an overview. Two options to achieve the minimum maths requirements for a chosen programme (with some exclusions):Enabling Maths Course (free), started Wednesday, August 28 to Friday September 6, with assessment at equivalent to Leaving Cert ordinary level paper. Applicants who are otherwise eligible but lack a pass in ordinary and higher-level maths are welcome.
