On Feb. 9, Billy Jack Haynes, 70, was arrested on suspicion of murdering his wife Janette Becraft, 85. As of this writing, he has not been charged with a crime. The arrest is a bleak coda to a remarkable life. Haynes was Oregon’s best-known professional wrestler, standing astride two eras: the regional, rickety promotions that won local allegiance, and the slick, cable-televised World Wrestling Federation.

There was much chatter coming from the barn as I arrived for evening chores. Pickles had already alerted me earlier in the morning that the much anticipated seed catalog had arrived. When I entered the barn, the animals were enthralled with the pictures. “Mrs. Dunn, do you have a pen? My pencil won’t work on the order sheet,” said Pickles. I found myself fumbling through my bibs for a pen … and stopped myself.

I heard deep sighs as I walked to the barn. There sat all the goofballs with their little goat faces looking glum. “What is wrong?” I asked. Pickles pushed something towards me. It was the farm calendar that had just arrived from the printer. In May of 2016, Walt Curtis mailed WW a typewritten letter. “My Gawd, I just heard that Katherine Dunn died,” he wrote. “I am saddened, stunned. “Mrs. Dunn, can you read us a story before you go?” asked Hannah. I was just finishing chores on a very hot afternoon and was looking forward to a shower. “I don’t have a book out here,” I said as I tried to escape to the house. Pickles the goat suddenly appeared before me, with a book. “We really like this one, Mrs. Dunn,” she said. “’Miss Rumphius.’”“Where did you get this?” I asked. “We have hidden library bucket in the hay loft,” she said. Who knew?

“But where do the stars go during the day?” asked little Hannah. “They’re still there, child,” said Poetry the old goat. “I can’t see them,” said Hannah. “Can you see the ocean as we sit here and speak?” asked the old goat. “No,” said little Hannah. “But the ocean is still there,” said Poetry. “I guess,” said Hannah. I’d been listening to the conversation as I swept up debris in the nearby feed room. “Hannah, why are you worried about the stars?” I asked. I sat down on a bench to rest for a few minutes.
