Even as Palo Alto grew with the founding of Stanford University in 1885 and the incorporation of the town of Mayfield, Midtown remained mostly farmland until the late 1940s. The end of World War II ushered in an economic growth spurt for Palo Alto, which saw a housing boom and its population double in the 1950s. To accompany the increased demand for goods and services, new shopping areas were developed, such as Stanford Shopping Center and Midtown Shopping Center.

Palo Alto's Midtown Shopping Center has seen better days. Built in the mid-20th century to serve a burgeoning post-war population, the new complex welcomed its first store in 1956: Midtown Pharmacy. For the next 30 years, the center catered to local residents. Among the fixtures were the department store Bergmann's, which sold everything from 45 rpm records and school gym uniforms to notions and clothing for the whole family, the Duca and Hanley grocery store, Peninsula Hardware and a Co-op Market.
