She figured she’d study hard, explore the Steel City, and then follow the winds wherever they took her. Once she arrived in Pittsburgh, however, Hamm never left. On clear nights through Sept. 20, the waxing moon and bright Jupiter will be visible to the naked eye. For closer observation, head to Mount Washington. On those evenings, Dan Peden, a hobbyist astronomer and 30-year member of the Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh, will set up a telescope along Grandview Avenue directly across from the Carnegie Library. On weekdays, it’s a mess of suits hurrying to office buildings. On weekends, the sidewalks are crowded with dressed-up men and women heading to a show or teeming with jersey-clad fans. While it’s not the lavish corporate America-meets-Eastern Europe-meets New York it once was, a vestige of Downtown’s vibrance remains.

I wasn’t judging. I didn’t get it, but I certainly wasn’t passing judgment on the selfies moms post after a cut and color. You know the images, where the mom is rocking fresh hair while enjoying a big (usually Starbucks) coffee in the driver’s seat. The ones where the mom is so obviously alone in the car, probably listening to her favorite non-Paw Patrol song blasting on repeat.

Annie wandered through the cemetery, summer sunshine kissing her cheeks. It doesn’t feel right to love the sun so much in a graveyard, she thought. But her grandfather wouldn’t want her to feel blue. In fact, he, ever the storyteller, probably wrote the sun into today’s sky, sent sunshine to greet her; the forecast had called for rain.

Humming along to the bird’s morning song, stopping to say hello to the scent of summer hanging on late spring’s breeze. Numbering the stars in a painting. Penning poetry inspired by a sliver of moon shining against a black night sky. Little delights, small moments that may not make it into a journal, may not be remembered by dinnertime; and yet, these acts are active participation in God’s creation.
