Continuing my goal of completion > consumption, this is what I completed this week:the book that’s lingered on my TBR (The Art of Power - an excellent read)a needlepoint project, and hoping to finish this one by the end of the month. doing an overdue wardrobe edit (these bags are a lifesaver for recycling clothes and accessories)The boys are back in school, and all of us are happier to be back in our normal schedule.

I’m writing this on Thursday - we’re still in Pennsylvania. The kids are playing a nonsensical version of hide-and-seek in our loft, where I’ve camped out on the couch as my office for the day. Thank goodness for noise-canceling headphones. Here’s how I hope we spend today (the Sunday of Labor Day weekend). I want to sip my coffee in bed while journaling and scrolling through my Instagram and Substack feeds, before getting in this Peloton ride.

None of this is to deny that perfectionism can be a destructive force in one’s life. Perfectionism can be harmful or helpful to anyone, depending on how that person manages it. Until we acknowledge the dichotomous and gendered nature of perfectionism, we are agreeing to sit idly as misguided men fly themselves straight into the burning sun, and as women’s wings are clipped off in the name of protection.

As a psychotherapist, I've worked with many self-described perfectionists, all of them bright, ambitious, hardworking people who inexplicably felt that something was wrong with them. But as I delved into their stories, as well as the research on perfectionism, I came to a startling realization: Perfectionism is not a pathology, and treating it like one is causing countless people — mostly women — to suffer needlessly.
