Using medication to treat opioid use disorder saves lives. It allows people who were suffering from addiction to feel normal, to have fewer cravings, and to be safe from having to obtain drugs on the street that may be laced with deadly doses of fentanyl or other drugs. This legislative session offers a chance to make this care option more accessible, boosting equity in health care and connecting more people with long-term addiction treatment.

The tones come over the scanner and 911 dispatch calls for multiple cars off the road with unknown injuries. The next voice that you generally hear is the voice of the chief. “Dispatch, this is Chief 28 responding to the scene”. There is no ambiguity. The training required to hold the title of chief is tremendous and the responsibility is immense. Past this, there is a clear chain of command in the fire service.

As a health care writer and policy analyst, I frequently encounter the term “risk” in discussions of medical issues. I also frequently see the term grossly misused in both the popular press and medical literature. Nowhere is this more evident than in the 2016 and 2022 CDC Guidelines for the prescription of opioids in the treatment of pain. In science, the term “incidence” is a measure of the likelihood that a defined outcome will occur.
