    Even as a smaller project, my kitchen renovation has consumed me this past year. We're chipping away at it bit by bit: paint the cabinets this month, paint the walls the next, update electrical, install a dishwasher... The list goes on. Now that my dishwasher is in, I've set my sights on updating another major appliance while retailers are running Black Friday appliance sales: the refrigerator.

    After one of the driest fall seasons the majority of the country has ever seen, weather experts predict that the winter is going to be a wetter one for nothern states. And anyone who has shoveled snow knows that wet snow is heavy snow, with the potential to make the job more back-breaking. Last season was my first winter in my new home in the suburbs of New York and, remarkably, the first time in about 12 years that I had to break out a shovel.
