But Ms Regan's hit out over the absence of a discussion on independence in talks between the two leaders. "If an independence supporting government doesn’t prioritise independence, then who will? Keir Starmer’s comments should act as a wake up call," she told The Herald.

According to the National Records of Scotland (NRS) a total of 16,548 Scots passed away from a condition which could have been treated or prevented - more than before the pandemic which ended a downward trend since 2001. Prevention or treatment could be through public health changes such as cancer screening programmes, medical interventions or policies such as banning smoking in public places.

Scots voted in an independence referendum in 2014, with the No side securing 55% of the vote. Since then, successive UK governments have denied the SNP's requests for a second referendum. In a last-minute change of plans, he failed to appear at the arranged meeting point. Instead, Mr Farage posted a photo on X of himself meeting activists at the party’s campaign headquarters on Quarry Street.
