HOULTON, Maine — The defendant in an Aroostook County murder trial clearly described an alleged kitchen altercation that he said led to the shooting death of his girlfriend, but he said he was unable to recall any details about how, when or why he discarded her body. Jayme Schnackenberg, 41, who is charged with the intentional and knowing 2023 murder of his live-in girlfriend Kimberly Hardy, took the stand in Aroostook County Superior Court in his own defense on Thursday afternoon in Houlton.

HOULTON, Maine – The Houlton Town Council voted 5-1 to accept the town manager’s immediate resignation following an executive session during Monday night’s meeting. Councilor Erin Matthews cast the dissenting vote. Town Manager Jeremy Smith was only in the top municipal post for eight months. He took the town’s administrative reins in early May, after making a cross-country move from New Mexico. Following Monday night’s vote, Smith said he wished things had worked out.

A trial for an Aroostook County man charged with the fatal shooting of his live-in girlfriend is expected to start on Monday, after jury selection took place on Thursday and Friday in Aroostook County Superior Court in Houlton. Jayme Schnackenberg, 42, of Monticello is slated to stand trial for the death of Kimberly Hardy, starting at 9 a.m. on Monday in Houlton. The trial is expected to last two weeks, according to the court clerk.
