For 26 years, the St. Pat’s for All (SPFA) Parade in Sunnyside and Woodside has led off St. Patrick’s season in NYC as the first inclusive parade. As the years went by, SPFA led the way for other parades across the city and around the country to open their ranks to include groups from the LGBTQIA+ community. Absent from Sunday’s march in Queens was the Pride Center of Staten Island, who were marching in their own borough’s parade for the first time, after decades of being turned away.

Projections and punditry are crazy-making, and no one really knows what will happen until the votes are counted. I can, however, help people in our election district and assembly district cast their ballots. There are thousands of us poll workers in New York City, and we are tired. At “Remembering Amber,” the tribute to Amber Hollibaugh on March 17, her friends, colleagues, and family recalled the life, times, and works of the “lesbian sex radical, ex-hooker, incest survivor gypsy child, poor-white-trash, high femme dyke,” who died last October, but whose work remains vital, and whose influence and ideas continue to reach new audiences.

St. Pat’s for All (SPFA), the inclusive march in Sunnyside and Woodside, Queens, celebrated its 25th anniversary this weekend, leading off the St. Patrick’s season on Sunday, March 3. The weather cooperated, unlike previous years, which have featured rain, snow and freezing cold, with the people of Sunnyside able to sit on the sunny side of the street this year. Temperatures reached 70-degree mark as pubs and restaurants opened their front windows for people to brunch and parade-watch.
