1 INTRODUCTION The global burden of maternal undernutrition remains unacceptably high. In 2015, 14.3% of women 20–49 years of age living in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) had a low body mass index (BMI) and the prevalence of anaemia among women 15-49 years of age was nearly 50% (Victora et al., 2021). Globally, it is estimated that 69% of women of reproductive age suffer from at least one micronutrient deficiency (Stevens et al., 2022).
