1 Introduction Life history theory is built upon the premise that resources, and the time and energy it takes to acquire them, are limiting, and that allocation of these resources to competing functions can result in trade-offs (Stearns 1992). Critical to the evolution of life history strategies is the cost of reproduction, where energy and resources allocated to breeding activities are not available for self-maintenance.
