Instead, we have a lot of fan boys stating the bleeding obvious and covering a much longer period of time. On the other hand, there are some really interesting and illuminating details here, so the film is an absolute must for fans. Touring plans for 1981 were afoot when Mark Chapman changed the world.

Given that Prioritise Pleasure was Rebecca Lucy Taylor’s (RLT) Back to Black, and that there’s been a lengthy wait for this new release, it’s no wonder that there’s so much anticipation around A Complicated Woman. Add to the mix her frankly jaw-dropping performance alongside Jake Shears in Cabaret in the West End, and you might be forgiven for expecting big changes. But Self Esteem knows a winning formula when she’s on to one.

If I’d have listened to this blind, I would have absolutely no idea who it was by. This isn’t the voice I remember on those Spandau backing tracks. In fact, it’s a sound straight from mid-80s soft rock. If that makes you feel quesy, step away now. Apparently Gary, like the rest of us, has been having a bit of a rough time. The pandemic, doomscrolling the news, the sudden realisation he hadn’t properly mourned his parents – all of this built up to an episode of anxiety and self-doubt.

Sometimes magic really can’t be recreated. However hard it’s strived for. The incendiary magic that was Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg three decades ago has not been conjured again in this long-awaited reunion. There are sparks of genius, for sure, and some notable beats and samples but it’s certainly no Doggystyle. Maybe the clue is in the “cheeky” title and painfully obvious condom packet imagery on the cover. So far, so teen.
