When Andrés Rivas was 3 years old, he clung to his tambor like a teddy bear, hitting the small drum not only with passion, but with rhythm. His uncle was the first to take notice and brought him to the local “nucleo,” a music school run by El Sistema, Venezuela’s revered youth music program. While percussion was Rivas’s first love, he would soon be holding a violin, handed to him when it was clear he was too small to reach the snare drum that towered overhead.
