    1 INTRODUCTION Despite mounting empirical evidence supporting a positive link between female senior appointments and corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance (Bear et al., 2010; Harjoto et al., 2015), it is unclear what drives the gender–CSR link. For example, will an organization's CSR performance automatically improve with more female senior appointments? What needs to be done, apart from filling top jobs with women, to improve a firm's CSR performance?
