1 INTRODUCTION Human exposure to microplastics (MPs) via ingestion of drinking water is an emerging health concern. Although the majority (up to 90%) of ingested MPs are excreted and detected in human feces, the pathophysiological consequences of those particles retained within the human body are still unclear.1 Toxicological studies have demonstrated that MPs are linked to neurotoxicity, oxidative stresses, and inflammatory and immunological responses.
