CNN  —  It’s all change in the world of Italian fashion. Gucci has named Demna Gvasalia as its creative director, as the struggling luxury house seeks to turn around its fortunes. Demna — who only goes by his first name, as of 2021 — will begin his new role in early July, Gucci owner Kering confirmed to CNN via a press release. The appointment comes after Kering last month said it would part ways with former designer Sabato De Sarno, who served as Gucci’s creative head for only two years.

Italian luxury house Versace has announced that Donatella Versace, after 28 years, is stepping down as chief creative officer and transitioning into an ambassadorship role. Versace — a rare woman at the creative helm of a big fashion brand and a cultural icon known for her empowerment of women and LGBTQ+ communities — is the younger sister of designer Gianni Versace, who founded the label in 1978. She became creative director in 1997 after Gianni was murdered.
