Ireton and Hawarden both hosted Memorial Day services on Monday. Ireton Memorial Day services were led by Ireton Bertram Post 276 at 10:30 a.m. at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton. Hawarden EMS hosts chamber meeting

Hawarden emergency medical service departments hosted chamber coffee last Thursday at the Hawarden fire station. About 25 people gathered for the meeting and EMS served taverns, chips and cake to celebrate National EMS Week. Later that evening, Hawarden EMS hosted an open house where the public could stop up and meet those who serve on the squad and see the different equipment they use to help keep Hawarden and the surrounding communities safe.
HRH to offer free pediatric screenings

The therapy team at Hawarden Regional Healthcare wants to give families easy access to expert insights about their child’s development. At 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 31, HRH will be offering a free screening day. Registration is not required. “Parents often have questions or concerns about how their child is progressing but can be unsure about developmental expectations or when they may benefit from extra support,” said speech-language pathologist Abby Halvorson.

Ireton Swimming Pool is set to open Monday, June 2. Susan Ten Napel will be pool manager for the season. Pool hours in Ireton will be 1-5 p.m. and 6:30-8 p.m., Monday through Friday and 1-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. In Hawarden, pool manager Laura Mora said the opening date isn’t exactly locked in yet, but she is grateful the pool will be able to be open this summer despite the damage caused from the Big Sioux River flood in June.

Ireton and Hawarden will each host Memorial Day services Monday, May 26. Hawarden Memorial Day services will be led by the Two Oakes American Legion Post No. 254 at 10 a.m. at Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden. The West Sioux High School band will perform and Sgt. 1st Class Derek Allen of Hawarden will give an address welcoming the crowd. If it is raining, the service will be at the high school auditorium. The featured speaker for the Hawarden service will be Master Sgt.

Sixty-seven seniors walked across West Sioux High School’s stage Sunday afternoon as part of the 2025 commencement ceremony. Smiles, nudges back and forward between classmates and some tears fell as senior class president Addison Westergard spoke to her classmates and the crowd. “First off, I want to say thank you,” Westergard began.

National Emergency Medical Services week is May 18-24 for EMS squads in the nation. Thirteen years ago, Patrick Birgess began volunteering for Hawarden Ambulance. Now he serves as the assistant director. “I honestly joined the squad because I felt it would make me more valuable as a firefighter but it has turned into so much more than that,” Birgess said.
Iowa Finance Authority awards over $1 million in Hawarden

The Iowa Finance Authority Board of Directors awarded a total of more than $9.5 million in federal housing tax credits to support the construction and rehabilitation of a total of 331 affordable rental homes for Iowans. The awards were made to ten rental housing projects located in Cerro Gordo, Jasper, Johnson, Polk, Pottawattamie, Scott, Sioux and Webster counties.
From lab to legacy

Sixty-one-year-old Duane Sperle has been teaching some form of science for 28 years in the West Sioux School District. Sperle will leave the lab and retire at the end of the school year. “I’m looking forward to a less stressful lifestyle to pursue hobbies, interests, travel and learning new skills,” Sperle said. “I won’t miss following a daily nine-period schedule with only 25 minutes for lunch.”Sperle’s original plan did not include being a teacher.
