Local blind and visually impaired students gathered Tuesday at the Western Pennsylvania School for the Blind in Oakland to test their skills at the annual Regional Braille Challenge. The competition evaluates students based on fundamental braille skills, as well as reading comprehension, spelling, and speed and accuracy. The youngest students, around five or six, focus on learning to use their fingers to gather information.

In the 1960s, a Pittsburgh woman named Dorothy Mae Richardson changed community development by creating a path for Black and brown families to stay in and maintain their homes. Her organizing became a model that’s still used today throughout the country. Richardson was born in the city’s Manchester neighborhood in 1922, and her family moved to Charles Street Valley when she was a teenager.

It’s one of Pittsburgh’s most iconic features, bringing in roughly 1.8 million visitors each year and serving as the backdrop for marriage proposals, family photos and graduation celebrations — this year marks the 50th anniversary of the Point State Park fountain. While there was no singing of “Happy Birthday” to the 150-foot water feature, politicians, nonprofit leaders and conservation advocates still happily commemorated the half-century-long presence of the fountain and its historic location.
