From Oklahoma’s founding through much of the 20th century, our state was a leader on access to divorce, including our adoption of “no-fault” divorce options in 1953, more than 20 years ahead of much of the rest of the country. Today, in a time when some are seeking to roll back access to divorce through the repeal of these options, it’s critical to recognize why divorce is important, sometimes even lifesaving, and what unnecessary barriers currently exist for people seeking a divorce.

The gold standard for meaningful access to justice is high-quality legal representation. Unfortunately for too many Oklahomans, that goal is quite literally out of reach. Oklahoma’s attorneys are increasingly concentrated in just a handful of counties, putting rural Oklahomans in the challenging situation of trying to navigate the legal system alone. This isn’t a new challenge, and it’s only getting worse.
