World number four Paolini and her team-mate Sara Errani clinched the deciding doubles 7-5 7-5 against Swiatek and Katarzyna Kawa after an extraordinary second-set comeback in Malaga. Twelve months ago, four-time champions Italy were beaten in the BJK Cup final by Canada.

Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid failed to retain their Wheelchair Masters doubles title with a straight-set defeat by Martin de la Puente and Joachim Gerard in the Netherlands. The British duo, who won the title for a third time together in 2023, lost 6-4 6-2 to the Spanish-Belgian pair. Reid and Hewett, who clinched the Paralympic doubles title in Paris this summer, had previously won the season-ending tournament in 2017 and 2021.

Jasmine Paolini won both her singles and doubles matches to lead Italy into the Billie Jean King Cup semi-finals with victory over Japan. Seeking a first semi-final at the event since 1966, Japan took the lead in the best-of-three tie when Ena Shibahara mounted a comeback to defeat Elisabetta Cocciaretto 3-6 6-4 6-4 in the opening singles match. But up stepped world number four Paolini to level the tie, swiftly beating 56th-ranked Moyuka Uchijima 6-3 6-4 to force a doubles decider.

French Open finalist Zverev had cruised through to the semi-finals and not had his serve broken across all three of his group matches, but that was to change against an inspired Fritz. Though he saved Fritz's first break point opportunity, he could only bat a blistering forehand into the net on his second as the American took a 4-2 lead. Flustered, Zverev took only a single point off Fritz's serve for the remainder of the opening set.
