A Lafayette man was arrested following a shooting that left one person injured Saturday night, the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office said. Deputies responded to the 100 block of Sweetbriar Street around 10:30 p.m. Saturday after a report of a shooting in progress and found one person suffering from non-life-threatening injuries. The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment, Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Valerie Ponseti said in a statement.

An Opelousas woman is accused of aggravated kidnapping after police officers say she held a Lyft driver at gunpoint in Lafayette. The incident happened around 10:10 p.m. Monday. The Lyft driver reported that he picked up the suspect, 37-year-old Denise Thomas of Opelousas, and a child in the 1700 block of N. University Avenue. He told police he gave Thomas his phone to enter the address of her destination, Lafayette Police spokesperson Sgt. Robin Green said in a release.

One person was killed in a crash near the intersection of Mudd Avenue and the Northeast Evangeline Thruway, the Lafayette Police Department said. The crash happened Friday morning. A man drowned in a Broussard retention pond on Wednesday afternoon, the Broussard Police Department said. Officers responded to the 100 block of Lakes Edge Drive around 12:36 p.m. Wednesday following a report of a drowning. Officers concluded that three men working in the area decided to take a swim in a retention pond. Witnesses said the victim, 36-year-old Manuel Gonzalez, began to have trouble swimming and went under. He never resurfaced, Broussard Police Capt. Zac Gerard said in a statement.

A federal jury found a former Acadiana educator guilty of one charge in a child sex crimes case but failed to reach a unanimous verdict on the second charge Wednesday. Jacob de la Paz, 34, of Youngsville, was found guilty of attempted receipt of child pornography on Wednesday afternoon, after roughly two and a half hours of jury deliberation. The decision closed out a three-day trial in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana.
