"Great, Katie, I've got Zach, who's in training, on the line for this call and I'll be stepping in to fill an advisory role," assured the deep voice booming out of my phone. I reflexively squeezed the button on the side to lower the volume. Self-conscious that people in the surrounding cubicles would hear my conversation, I slipped into a nearby fishbowl phone alcove and slid the glass door closed behind me with a force that revealed my unfamiliarity with my new workplace's meeting rooms.

This newsletter’s two-year anniversary slipped by without me noticing. Maybe that’s because other milestones were on my mind. My husband and I just marked ten years of living in our apartment. I hesitate to even call this a gift guide. I hope it’s a resource you can come back to when your boyfriend’s friend’s parents invite you to their chalet for the weekend or when you get a slack that you’re in a last-minute Secret Santa situation. This essay was originally published in New York Magazine’s The Cut. And my inspiration to share it here comes from one of my favorite writers, and a podcast she was on called Content People. I’ve listened to this episode of Money With she was on multiple times. When I was growing up, my skin was “textured.” As soon as my period started, so did the acne. I ignored it mostly, too focused on updating my Tumblr or playing volleyball to notice.
