In William Boyd’s novel Any Human Heart the main character, Logan Mountstuart, becomes so pitifully broke he resorts to eating dog food (apparently good as a curry with rice). Today as an image of poverty it doesn’t fully make sense. My dog’s food is better quality, and more expensive, than anything I eat myself.
