Republican incumbent Jen Kiggans was in the lead Tuesday night against Democratic challenger Missy Cotter Smasal in the race to represent Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District in the U.S. House. She received 53% of the votes reported compared with Cotter Smasal’s 44.5%. The Associated Press had not called the race by 1 a.m. Wednesday. Norfolk’s elections czar is urging absentee voters to prioritize their mail-in ballots. “You don’t want to wait until a week before the election and then decide to put it in the mail,” said Stephanie Iles, the city’s director of elections and general registrar. “There is a possibility that we might not get it in time.”The United States Postal Service has faced nationwide slow downs in the last few years due to strains from the pandemic and various operational cutbacks.

Virginia expects to receive about $5.3 million related to a property dispute between Delaware and a coalition of other states. “Today’s settlement is a big win for Virginia consumers, resolving nearly eight years of litigation,” Attorney General Jason Miyares said in a Friday release. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled last year that Delaware could not keep money from unclaimed MoneyGram checks. MoneyGram is an international peer-to-peer payment and money transfer company.
