Carla Ward, Ireland's new head coach, doesn't shy away from a challenge and isn't put off by the FAI controversy that emerged just as she was announced to take what she saw as a coveted job. "Aren't all football clubs and organisations (surrounded by controversy)? I think that’s the nature of football, isn’t it?" Ward laughs telling RTÉ Sport.

While Carla Ward's Republic of Ireland WNT appointment press conference was dominated by talk of Colin Healy's dispute over his departure from the FAI, the ex-Aston Villa boss made very clear the intentions for her tenure. The main, and obvious, goal is to make the World Cup in 2027, but with only 11 slots available for European nations, Ward has a tough task ahead but explained that the "Irish mentality" may make the lofty goal that bit easier to achieve.

It has been a history-making season for Cuala and Peadar Ó Cofaigh Byrne, with possibly more to come on Sunday in the AIB All-Ireland Club Football Championship final. Cuala won the Dublin and Leinster football titles for the first time this year and will be looking to become only the second club to win All-Ireland finals in both codes. The club won back-to-back hurling titles in 2017 and 2018, a time that Ó Cofaigh Byrne remembers fondly.

Clonliffe's Efrem Gidey broke John Treacy's 40-year-old 10km Irish record by three seconds in Valencia on Sunday. Valencia is the home of fast road running, with the Spanish city boasting both the men's and women's best half-marathon efforts. Elite athletes flock to the streets to achieve personal bests, records and qualifying times. In the 10km Valencia Ibercaja race on Sunday morning, Gidey hit a steady 13:52 five kilometre split before finishing the full distance in 27:43.
