Grocers are trying to remain competitive while also struggling with a rise in the minimum wage and an increase in payroll taxes. (Bloomberg) -- UK food inflation nudged up in May to the highest level in a year, as British supermarkets battle higher operating costs stemming from the UK government’s revenue-raising budget. Food inflation rose for a fourth consecutive month to 2.8%, up from 2.6% in April, the British Retail Consortium said Tuesday. Fresh goods were the main driver.

Marks & Spencer Group Plc is facing a £300 million ($403 million) hit to operating profit this fiscal year from a cyberattack that’s still disrupting the company’s sales and operations. The British retailer will try to mitigate the impact with cost savings and insurance payouts, it said Wednesday. Online clothing and home orders, which account for more than £3 million of sales a day and have been suspended for more than three weeks, will be disrupted into July.

DHL eCommerce UK, part of Germany’s DHL Group, will merge with rival delivery service Evri, the latest in a string of deals in the crowded British courier space. As part of the deal, DHL will acquire a significant minority stake in Evri, the companies said Wednesday, without disclosing terms. The agreement will see Evri enter the UK business letter market for the first time. Apollo Global Management Inc., which bought Evri from Advent International last year, will remain the majority shareholder.
