The Trump administration has begun drafting an executive order that would kick off the process of eliminating the Department of Education, the latest move by President Donald Trump to swiftly carry out his campaign promises, two sources familiar with the plans told CNN. The move would come in two parts, the sources said. The order would direct the secretary of Education to create a plan to diminish the department through executive action.

WASHINGTON — The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, known as the FAFSA, officially opened Nov. 21 for students seeking financial aid for college during the 2025-2026 school year. The form traditionally opens on October 1, but the Department of Education delayed the release in an effort to avoid a repeat of last year’s rocky rollout after making significant updates to the application.
