It was a dream for Peter Kirsch, a place for kids in the Crowley community to gather and share their love of sports. "This is where these kids get their first lesson in civic pride, teamwork, accountability, responsibility, and it really joins the community together," Kirsch, director of the Tony Robichaux Sports Complex, said. "They come from different schools, backgrounds, and walks of life. For an hour and half that day or two hours that day, they are teammates, they are one unit.

Back in May, the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recommended that mammograms begin at age 40 and screenings should happen every other year after. According to the Task Force, this could prevent one additional breast cancer death for every 1,000 women. It is a recommendation that was not in place when Brittany Strentz was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 36. She knew the importance of getting screened because her mother was diagnosed at 40.

Camryn Reed started to race go-carts at the age of nine, today she is 17 and competes with the best of the best as professional go-cart racer. "It was intimidating when I first started," Reed said. "There were things said to me and actions on track that you wouldn't see normally. It was a rough start, but once I started getting out front and showing them, I could run with anybody those feelings started to change. They know that I have the speed to beat them, and they take it personal.

Dr. Aimee Hymel has always been interested in nutrition, but it was not something she saw as a career goal--that is until she started going through surgical training. "As I learned more about all of the surgical specialties, this just made the most sense to me and I just found it very fulfilling," Hymel, a bariatric surgeon at Our Lady of Lourdes, said. In this field, Hymel said she gets to meet people where they are and help to develop a plan for them to achieve a healthier lifestyle.

Emily Terrell said her days are filled with appointments; meeting with those kids who need little extra support. "We are geared to working with really behavioral issues and what not," Terrell said. "We have a case load that we have to work on and sped kids we have to provide interventions for."A social worker at JW Faulk, Terrell said because her caseload is so high, some children fall by the wayside.
