    Armed police have swarmed a suburb in Canterbury as part of a pre-planned operation this morning. The incident took place on Northcote Rd in the Christchurch suburb of Northcote. Multiple armed police and vehicles could be seen surrounding the address at about 10am. A drug sniffer dog was also led onto the property. One person was taken into a police vehicle in handcuffs.

    Police described the latest death as a result of a “vehicle incident” in Napier overnight. The incident, on Nuffield Ave in Marewa, was reported to police at 9pm on Friday. Emergency services rushed to the scene, where one person was found in critical condition. “Efforts to resuscitate the man were unsuccessful and he died at the scene,” said a police spokesperson. The road was blocked overnight but has since reopened. The Serious Crash Unit conducted a scene examination. Inquiries are ongoing.

    A person living at the house where a woman was seriously injured in a violent attack claims it was a “hook-up gone wrong”. A 17-year-old has been charged and a woman is in a serious condition after she was allegedly assaulted inside her Mt Eden home overnight. A flatmate told the Herald the teen had come to the property to “hook up” with the woman but that it had “gone wrong”. “He [allegedly] smashed her in the face and kicked her in the face too,” she said.

    Star actor Sir Sam Neill has described the Government’s Dunedin hospital funding cut plans as “short-sighted, careless, heartless, ruthless”. Infrastructure Minister Chris Bishop and Health Minister Shane Reti last month announced that the cost of the project has escalated to an estimated $3 billion from an original estimate of between $1.2b-$1.4b in 2017. An independent review, commissioned by the Government, concluded that the project could not proceed within the current budget, they said.

    By Katie Oliver, Multimedia Journalist of A Christchurch man has been jailed after admitting he used the identities of 10 strangers - including a dead person - to apply for more than $65,000 in Covid wage subsidy payments. Adam James Letchford, 40, made 14 applications between April and June 2020, pretending to be various men and women. One of the applications was in the name of a person who is dead. Initially, Letchford fraudulently applied in his own name and was paid nearly $30,000.
