A distraught Johnny Sexton signed off his rugby career in heartbreaking fashion, with Ireland being knocked out of the Rugby World Cup via a quarter-final defeat to New Zealand. The Irish quarter-final curse continued with a narrow 28-24 defeat to the All Blacks in Paris. Andy Farrell's class of 2023 were bidding to make history by becoming the first Irish team to reach the last four of the tournament.

Wales star Nick Tompkins showed his class with a small yet powerful gesture to teammate Sam Costelow after his pass was intercepted for Argentina to score a try to effectively seal a Los Pumas semi-final. With Wales chasing the game in the final quarter, Nicolas Sanchez intercepted a Costelow pass to sprint away to score and then added a late penalty to rub salt in the wounds and send Warren Gatland's side home due to being on the wrong side of a 29-17 scoreline.

Wales manager Rob Page has promised to "ignore the noise" amid reports that his job could be in jeopardy. It was reported on Saturday morning - little more than 24 hours before Wales' vital Euro 2024 qualifier against Croatia in Cardiff - that Football Association of Wales chief executive Noel Mooney had wanted former Sunderland and Ipswich manager and TV pundit Roy Keane to replace Page following June defeats to Armenia and Turkey.
