Kavitha Rao’s Spies, Lies and Allies takes us back to the first half of the 20th century to relate the life stories of Virendranath Chattopadhyay or Chatto (1880–1937) and Narendranath Bhattacharya, or M.N. Roy (1887–1954). In this account, they lead “parallel lives”, in that they were contemporaries who did much the same thing for long periods of time although their lives rarely intersected.
