Students for Justice in Palestine were arrested following their protest outside of President Aondover Tarhule’s office. According to a university statement, the arrest took place at approximately 7 p.m. on Friday at Hovey Hall. Multiple warnings were given regarding the building closure time, but the members stayed. After a group vote, several members from Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) decided to move their encampment right outside of President Aondover Tarhule’s office in Hovey Hall. The students are taking a more direct approach to having their needs met, including a statement calling for a ceasefire, transparency on university funds and more. Aidan Marcikic, a junior psychology major, said that the group wanted to make their voices heard first-hand by administration.

Students for Justice in Palestine held a call to action at noon Tuesday on the Quad in solidarity with Palestine in its ongoing conflict with Israel. Members set up an encampment and hung a flag on the gazebo reading “People’s University for Gaza.” “We started a protest here on the Quad with solidarity with people in Columbia who started the encampments and have been brutalized by the police force, as well as shut down by the universities where they started their encampments,” an organizer said.

President Aondover Tarhule announced Dr. Ani Yazedjian as vice president for academic affairs and provost on Tuesday. Yazedjian’s five-year contract is effective Wednesday. President Aondover Tarhule announced a focused search for a vice president of academic affairs and provost, with Dr. Ani Yazedjian nominated for the role. Acting as provost since February 17, 2023, Yazedjian's appointment emphasizes shared governance, inclusion and diversity. She will lead a campus open forum at 11 a.m. on Thursday in the Old Main Room of the Bone Student Center. Prior to the announcement, Tarhule consulted with university stakeholders and the Academic Senate on April 10.
