Following its Donmar Warehouse and West End run in 2024, Macbeth, directed by Max Webster and starring David Tennant and Cush Jumbo, releases its live-streaming film version. Webster’s production is, on the whole, wonderfully lucid, pure, and uncluttered. Though a very intense psychological horror thriller, it carries a mysteriously crystalline undertone.

Directed by Meghan Doyle and adapted by Ellen McDougall, the National Youth Theatre’s Twelfth Night is an immersive, Christmassy delight, spoiling audiences with wine, songs, parties, and moments of hilarious dark comedy. The production feels somewhat rushed, with most characters’ portrayals blending together, making them resemble restless high school teenagers. This casting style is less convincing during the delicate love scenes, such as the willow cabin and music scenes.

While you retain all your memories and knowledge, you hold no idea what lies ahead. This is what happened to A Christmas Carol(ish), Nick Mohammed’s comedic retelling Charles Dickens’ classic. On the press night, there was a persistent power/technical issue that eventually halted the show.
