TORONTO -- The hardest throw from the Blue Jays on Friday night didn’t even come from the mound. Addison Barger completely took the game over with his cannon from right field, and that cannon just kept firing. With three throws spread across the fourth and fifth innings, Barger cut down two runners himself and helped with a third, snuffing out any sense of the Mariners’ momentum over and over again.

If his thumb behaves and Scherzer bounces back into this Blue Jays rotation a few weeks from now, an already excellent rotation could be one of the best in baseball. If that thumb keeps barking, then this anxious conversation stretches on and Toronto’s depth will be further tested. Scherzer recently received a second cortisone shot in his thumb after meeting with another hand specialist.

TORONTO -- The Blue Jays optioned Davis Schneider to Triple-A Buffalo on Thursday, the first of what could be multiple outfield moves as Daulton Varsho nears his return. Schneider started the season just 1-for-15 (.067) at the plate, so there’s no mystery behind why this move was made given the role the Blue Jays were hoping he’d fill early in the season. This creates an open spot for Nathan Lukes, who is due to return from the paternity list in time for Friday’s game against the Mariners.

Chris Bassitt was dealing with some neck spasms, which is why he didn’t push past 100 pitches. He adapted, though, to that and the cold weather. Bassitt says he is “very proud of the team” and knows the bats will be “more explosive” soon. #BlueJays

John Schneider praised his players multiple times tonight for “playing their asses off” in Boston. Chris Bassitt echoed that, praising the “gritty wins” Bassitt: “As long as we’re keeping our team in the ballpark, so to speak… we’re going to win a lot of games.” #BlueJays
