I don’t recall now exactly where and when I first heard the words “Radio Free Europe” but I do remember that those words were stirring and hopeful even to a pre-teen in postwar America. For me, it would have been no later than the early 1950s. My father was a military man who had a hand in the destruction of Nazi Germany and the Allied liberation of Europe, serving in the Army Air Corps, in World War II.

Until the early 1980s, it didn’t matter much to most Tennesseans what Washington might do to the U.S. auto industry. But that all changed in 1983, when Nissan first and then General Motors and later Volkswagen came here and put us on an updated map of the automotive industry - the new map of where cars and trucks are made across the world. Today, more than 142,000Tennesseans are employed on vehicle assembly lines and in the connected supply and support operations.
