Japan–Laos relations are quietly growing. In 2015, both countries elevated their relationship to a ‘strategic partnership’ to advance security, economic and socio-cultural ties. Japan has promised its cooperation with Laos as the 2024 ASEAN chair and both countries have expressed willingness to further elevate their relationship to a ‘comprehensive strategic partnership’ in anticipation of the 70th anniversary of Japan–Laos diplomatic relations in 2025.
