Every year, there’s a book that drops right as the year is ending, and everyone has slid their favorite books into place forgetting to leave space for another, and that book is always one of the best of the year. Peach Momoko has spent the last few years proving that she is one of the premier artists in comics today. Starting with her covers, then moving into her own universe Demon Saga, and now really hitting superstardom with Ultimate X-Men, Momoko has claimed a rare reputation across the Big Two as a cartoonist who basically gets to do what they want (other current notable title holder is Daniel Warren Johnson).

The last couple of years have had me following the Amazing Spider-Man Masterworks and Zeb Wells’ Amazing Spider-Man run somewhat concurrently, so now maybe it’s time for me to dip my toes into something a little different with the somehow both seminal and slept-on Spider-Girl by DeFalco and Frenz. Why Spider-Girl? Did I somehow have a spider-shaped hole in my heart?

At this point in the run, the typical reader knows where they stand on Zeb Wells’ Amazing Spider-Man. Maybe it lost them when MJ and Peter weren’t together in the first issue. Maybe they jumped when Ms. Marvel got killed. Maybe they stopped because Gang War was so boring. Or maybe they have bad art opinions and never hopped on because of John Romita, Jr..

What a weird week to be writing about a Spider-Man comic. The nature of culture (and politics) generally looking backward toward some imagined golden age where everyone was happy and taken care of, and how that has caused every system imaginable to cave in on itself in the last 30 or so years almost makes me want to reactionarily hate this book out of principle.

It’s always tough when something you’re really loving feels like it’s being ignored, maybe especially as a critic. It isn’t some terrible pain or whatever, more like a nagging annoyance that people don’t just gravitate toward good things for whatever reason. That was my experience with Shang-Chi by Gene Luen Yang while it was running. Why wasn’t @magnetowasright69 tweeting enough about it?

Early this year, I finally found a way to read and catch up on Paklis, which was immediately one of my favorite comics. It’s a masterpiece on every level, but particularly a conceptual one, where it’s an anthology of the most insanely cool ideas I’ve read in each story, drawn by Dustin Weaver, one of the best living artist. 1949 is the first time the series has been collected, and is a great introductory story, if only for the conceptual shenanigans Weaver gets up to in it.

Wolverine approaches the end of its run with brutality and philosophical pondering. This is the kind of ending the Krakoa era deserved. Benjamin Percy’s (and friends) run on Wolverine has been a highlight most of the way through. It’s had its highs and lows, but it’s almost always been able to have some depth even while primarily being an action comic.

Historically, I’m not a huge fan of Doctor Strange. Yet, I’ve read a lot of Doctor Strange this year. I keep getting tricked. First by Tradd Moore (Fall Sunrise, very good book). Next by Cates (pretty good book). Now, my last review of the year, is covering the Waid and Saiz Doctor Strange from a few years (feels like an eternity) ago.
