TOKYO -- With bitcoin prices touching a new high on Tuesday, its market capitalization of over $1.35 trillion approached that of silver as investments flow in due to policy-driven factors, demand as a safe-haven asset and wider adoption of the cryptocurrency. Bitcoin prices reached $69,045 on Tuesday, up more than 3% from the previous day, breaking the record high of $68,990 set in November 2021, according to research firm CoinDesk.

TOKYO -- Keisuke Honda, a former player on Japanese national soccer team, is launching a fund, a fund to invest in Japanese startups, with deployment of capital expected to start as early as February. The fund aims to raise 15 billion yen ($101 million) by the end of the year, primarily from domestic and foreign institutional investors.

TOKYO -- Japan's Orix Bank and global cryptocurrency exchange group Binance Holdings are among the companies weighing plans to issue stablecoins in Japan, moves that could lead to faster, lower-cost transactions for businesses. Stablecoins are digital tokens designed to track legal tender, gold or other assets to maintain price stability. Tether and USD Coin are leading examples.

TOKYO -- Japanese fintech developer Soramitsu has joined an effort to build a cross-border payment system for Asian countries involving Cambodia's central bank digital currency, the core of a growing international network. Soramitsu has supported the issuance of Asian CBDCs Bakong in Cambodia and Laos' Digital Lao Kip. Bakong is already used for QR code-based digital payments between Cambodia and Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.
