HALIFAX — The fortunes of the federal Liberals in Atlantic Canada are likely to stay strong after election night, although maintaining the party’s dominance won’t come without a fight, say political observers. At dissolution, the Liberals held 23 of 32 seats, the Conservatives held eight; one seat was vacant. “I feel like Atlantic Canada could provide a snapshot for how the Liberals and the Conservatives end up duking it out,” said Dalhousie University political scientist Lori Turnbull.

FREDERICTON - New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt announced on Monday a comprehensive review of the province’s debt-laden electric utility. Holt said the independent review of Crown-owned NB Power will be conducted by a three-person panel who will gather and analyze data, seek public feedback and develop recommendations. All options will be considered for the utility and its operations because with soaring power bills for customers, “the status quo is no longer an option,” the premier said.

CHARLOTTETOWN - In the face of economic headwinds caused by American tariffs, the government of Prince Edward Island tabled a $3.5-billion budget Thursday, with a record projected deficit of nearly $184 million for the 2025-26 fiscal year. Finance Minister Jill Burridge said the $183.9 million deficit figure includes a $32-million tariff and trade contingency fund to guard against an economic downturn resulting from tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
