WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH/Gray News) - An ongoing tuberculosis outbreak in northeast Kansas has become the largest in United States history, according to health officials. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has tracked this outbreak for over a year. Since 2024, there have been 67 tuberculosis cases reported in two Kansas counties, according to KDHE.

HOXIE, Kan. (KWCH/Gray News) – A family in Kansas is left searching for answers after a 5-year-old boy was left on his school bus alone for several hours. The Hoxie School District confirmed the incident happened on Oct. 28. Although a few weeks have passed, Leta Meitl, the 5-year-old’s grandmother, still has unanswered questions. Meitl said her grandson, who is in kindergarten, boarded the bus that morning and fell asleep during the ride.

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Arkansas City wants people to limit their water usage. The city moved into Stage 1 of its drought plan effective immediately after Tuesday’s city commissioner’s meeting. Stage 1 does not make water conservation mandatory. Instead, it’s a voluntary measure. WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - The latest Kansas Department of Transportation traffic report has good news: Traffic deaths are down this year. From January 1, 2024, to July 30, 2024, traffic deaths are down 17.8% compared to 2023. This new data comes as we are on the downslope of the 100 deadliest days for teen drivers, which ends on Labor Day. When it comes to where the fatal crashes are, the Kansas Highway Patrol says there isn’t a specific part of the state where these happen.

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - A Nebraska Middle Schooler created a scam awareness flyer for older adults after he learned his grandma was a scam victim. Parker Cosimano from Omaha started hanging up the scam prevention flyers on foot at senior centers. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) helped him take Cosimano’s “A Senior’s Guide to scam prevention” to the next level by getting the poster into every senior center across Nebraska.

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - The Wellington School District will not let students carry phones in their pockets this fall. The district is joining many other Kansas districts in banning cell phones in classrooms. High school students will have to put their cell phones and headphones into caddies when they walk into the classroom. The students will be able to access their cell phones between classes and during lunch.

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Extreme heat can pose a serious risk for babies. With that, there’s an emphasis on vehicle safety and a reminder that it’s always important to check your baby’s car seat before and after you buckle them in. But the Kansas Infants Death and SIDS (KIDS) Network worries about babies at home, too, especially if there is no air conditioning. To keep babies safe in the heat, hydrate, especially if you are breastfeeding. Second, clear the crib.
