The Villages Community Development District is moving most of its offices to Brownwood Paddock Square. The District’s primary customer service center will open Wednesday at 3571 Kiessel Road in the former Street of Dreams building. After Wednesday’s opening, the hours will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, closed Saturday and Sunday.

In the early morning hours of Sept. 27 as Hurricane Helene impacted the area, the quick response of Sumter County Fire & EMS crews led to a remarkable recovery for a Sumter County woman. During the chaos of the storm, Denisha Platt was driving back to Bushnell from Inverness just after midnight after picking up a friend following her shift as a nurse that night. In the darkness and rain, Platt collided with large tree that had been knocked down by the storm and was blocking the road.

Eastport, The Villages’ newest downtown, will begin coming to life in 2025. It will combine the most popular elements of The Villages’ lifestyle — recreation, golf, shopping, dining and entertainment — all in one location in the heart of the community. The first restaurant to be announced for the downtown is Prime + Ember Signature Steakhouse — an upscale dining destination featuring a rooftop bar overlooking Central Lake.

The men and women of The Villages Public Safety Department don’t seek recognition. But when Brian Twiss took over as the VPSD Fire Chief, he made it a priority to honor the staff for the sacrifices they make while protecting The Villages community. About 180 members of the department and their families gathered recently at Ezell Recreation for the second annual VPSDawards & Recognition Ceremony. The event is one Twiss plans to make a meaningful tradition for VPSD.

One of the newest initiatives launched by The Villages Public Safety Department is already saving lives. VPSD personnel were recognized recently by HCA Florida Ocala Hospital for providing blood to a patient before they could be transported by helicopter to the Level I trauma center. Their efforts no doubt saved the patient’s life, said Cory Hewitt, vice president of trauma services for the hospital.

Work crews continued the Herculean efforts to clean up debris while many aspects of The Villages lifestyle began to return Friday in the wake of Hurricane Milton. With themselves now safe, residents also pivoted to how they could help others in need. Amid all the indoor recreation facilities opening Friday, shops and restaurants returning to greet customers and the signature entertainment back on the squares, community members also had a chance to lend a helping hand.
