The average winning score at TPC Summerlin for the Shriners Children’s Open is 23 under par over the past five years. Those same five champions average 26 sub-par scores on their way to the winner’s circle. One tradition I like to start my golf betting week is checking the over/under on the winning score for the upcoming tournament.

Only two players (NOT named Tiger Woods) have won the same event three years in a row over the last 40-plus years! Believe it or not, Tiger did it for six different events in a nine-year span. Two of those six three-year runs extended to a fourth year. But he’s the greatest of all-time and an unfair comparison to mere golfing mortals. Tom Kim has a chance to be the third three-time winner this century at the Shriners Children’s Open.

My condolences to those who didn’t skip Keith Mitchell last week. He held your optimism until the very end. In many ways, there’s a lesson inside that bitter disappointment: Favorites seldom win in regular season PGA Tour events. Sure, the signature level tournaments were all sealed up by Scottie Scheffler, but when the rank and file compete, we see a much broader spectrum of results. Prior to Mississippi, Mitchell’s previous week playing with the lowest odds was the Barracuda Championship in July.
