INTRODUCTION Establishing an ecologically functioning forest restoration requires a diverse vegetation structure appropriate for the site (Hughes et al., 2018), supportive soil and hydrological conditions (Schoenholtz et al., 2000), and ecological processes that lead to a self-sustaining and resilient forest ecosystem (Palmer & Stewart, 2020; Suding et al., 2015).
