Juanita Nieves, or Mamá by family, was born in Queretaro, México, on Dec. 22, 1942, and died on April 25, 2025, at the age of 82 in Oakland. Juanita was always a woman with a sharp mind and determination; she had taught herself to read and write as a young girl, a true accomplishment as she was barred from formal education.
