The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Jeremy Hunt, has announced that the government will abolish the current tax regime for individuals who are UK resident but not UK domiciled in favour of a residency-based system, which will apply from 6 April 2025. The proposed changes are wide-ranging and will affect both individuals currently living in the UK and those planning to move to the UK.

I've bought a UK property, as my job will keep me here for 5 years or more. I have put a Will in place as my conveyancer suggested to deal with the house. It covers all my assets, including my assets in France, where I remain domiciled In addition to tax, domicile affects succession (and divorce). The provisions which deem someone domiciled in the UK after 15 years' residence apply to tax only.

Is there any pre-arrival planning I should do or can I settle in first? It's important, if possible, to plan in advance, ideally during the tax year before becoming UK resident (the UK tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April). This should ensure that full account is taken of the regime of the jurisdiction from which the executive is departing, as well as that of the UK, and perhaps taking advantage of a tax window between departure from one and arrival in the other.
