By Kelsey KendallJorge Valenzuela walked across the stage at Old Dominion University last week to receive his doctorate in educational leadership. Years before that milestone moment, Valenzuela stepped into a New York kindergarten class as a substitute for the first time and felt more than a little intimidated at the prospect of trying to teach the kids what they needed to learn. “But as soon as I got up in front of my students, I realized I was born to be a teacher,” Valenzuela, Ph.D., said.

Old Dominion University and Christopher Newport University want to hear from the community on proposed tuition and fee increases for the next school year. ODU is holding a forum Thursday on a possible tuition hike of up to 5% for undergraduate students. Mandatory fees could increase up to 7%.

The Portsmouth School Board unanimously approved its budget for the upcoming year Thursday night. The $269.3 million budget is nearly $20 million more than last year’s and includes a 7% raise for all employees and other staff retention and recruitment initiatives. There is also funding for technology upgrades, athletic security coverage and more to assist with security and operational improvements.

The Norfolk School Board voted Wednesday on a $671.6 million budget, including staff raises, plans to “right-size” the division and “out of the box” initiatives. The budget was approved 5-2 with members Tanya Bhasin and Rodney Jordan voting against it. Vice chair Noelle Gabriel said the budget is “holistic and prescriptive” regarding staff compensation and student needs.
