Story by Ken Duke | Photos by Tanner & Travis LyonsFor anyone 50 or older, “BR-549” conjures up memories of a television variety show that ran for nearly 30 years in the 1960s, ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s. “Hee Haw.”“BR-549” was a regular sketch on the show. It featured a hefty country bumpkin named Alvin Monroe Samples, Jr.—better known as “Junior”—portraying a shady used car salesman.

Story by Ken DukeIt must be hard for anyone but me and my oldest friends to believe, but once upon a time I was young. Even then I was into fishing. I was just learning—still am—and it was new and exciting. Still is. I lived with my parents and brother in what I was sure was the middle of nowhere, South Carolina—Saluda County, not far from Lake Murray, but far from what I figured was the center of the bass fishing universe.

Story by Ken DukeFirst, let’s establish the boundaries. Lipless crankbaits are different from “crankbaits” because they do not have a diving lip. Instead, they often feature a flat or slightly rounded planing surface on top of the bait that gives these lures their characteristic fast vibrating action when retrieved. Most lipless crankbaits sink, but a few are made to float.

Story by Ken Duke | Photos by Tanner & Travis LyonsI have a great admiration for people who can summarize great thoughts in just a few words. I collect those quotes and often type them up, print them out and stick them on filing cabinets, bookcases or the walls of my office.

Story by Ken DukeA mile high in the Guatemalan section of the Sierra Madres is Lago de Atitlán. It was formed by a volcanic eruption about 80,000 years ago, and it’s the deepest lake in Central America. In places, it’s almost 1,200 feet deep. The lake is unique, and as proof of that it was the only place where the giant pied-billed grebe (Podilymbus gigas) could be found. If you’ve never heard of the giant pied-billed grebe, don’t be concerned. Few have, and even fewer have ever seen one.

Bass fishing is one of few outdoor pursuits that, in some places anyway, can be enjoyed year-round. However, depending on the season, the fishing can be alternately thrilling and maddening. During springtime, bass move shallow in preparation for the spawn and can provide fast-and-furious action ... until a cold front shuts everything down. Summer can be strong, but lakes are often crowded, and crawling a worm or fishing slow and deep may be the key to getting bites. Winter is hit-or-miss.

Few things in bass fishing are as important as preparation. Before I go fishing—whether I’m fishing for fun or competing on the Bassmaster Elite Series—I prepare. That means studying the water I’ll be fishing, looking at the weather I’ll be facing, and packing the right tackle to handle it. I do all that through OmniaFishing.com and Omnia PRO. Prepping to fish a body of water is critical, whether it’s your first time there or you’ve been there many times before.

In his celebrated poem "The Waste Land," T.S. Eliot claimed that "April is the cruelest month." That proves just one thing: Eliot was no bass angler. If he had been, "The Waste Land" would have been a very different poem. It might look something like this:April is the greatest month, bringing Lunkers into shallow water, crashing Topwaters near spawning grounds, mauling Swimming worms in grass, putting Smiles on the faces of anglers in the South. You see, April is like that, at least in the South.
