Who knew that back in 1970, that a New Hampshire man would move to Martha’s Vineyard, become the new high school music teacher, and just by chance lead the girls’ basketball program, win 383 games, two state championships, and in 2009 get inducted into the Massachusetts Coaches Hall of Fame? Meet Bob Nute. Recently, I asked Coach Nute if he had any idea that he would get involved in basketball when he accepted the Vineyard music teacher position. There’s no crying in football. We beat ‘em on the Vineyard. We beat ’em on Nantucket. We almost beat ’em in Boston. This year’s Martha’s Vineyard/Nantucket clash took place in the magical setting of Fenway Park. A couple of thousand fans from both Islands enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime experience watching our athletes play on the hallowed field once graced by Ted Williams, Pedro Martinez, David Ortiz, Jim Rice and Carl Yastrzemski. And like many of the games in the past, it came down to the very end.

During most of the 1970’s it was a Vineyard ritual. Many of us spent Thanksgiving day with family and friends. Then Saturday came along and it was off to the horse races. You knew you were in for a fun afternoon only if you knew how to find John and Kappy Halls’ place in West Tisbury, where the races traditionally took place. That was the spot to hang out with friends, share some bubbly, and place a friendly bet while watching the horses run.

AbstractRobotics can play a useful role in the scientific understanding of the sense of self, both through the construction of embodied models of the self and through the use of robots as experimental probes to explore the human self. In both cases, the embodiment of the robot allows us to devise and test hypotheses about the nature of the self, with regard to its development, its manifestation in behavior, and the diversity of selves in humans, animals, and, potentially, machines.
