Billions of red-eyed cicadas from a distinct brood will emerge soon from the ground in East Tennessee to mate. The 17-year periodical cicadas of Brood XIV will begin to take wing when the soil temperature at 8 inches deep reaches 64 degrees, which is estimated to be in late April to early May, according to the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture.

There were 81 fatal or serious injury vehicle crashes in 2024 in Greene County, including 53 that involved occupants not wearing seat belts, according to the Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security. Greeneville Mayor Cal Doty issued a proclamation this week designating April 13-19 as "Buckle Up For Safety and Lives Week."Doty was joined by Dr. John Hamilton, a Greeneville chiropractor and longtime advocate of seat belt safety education.

Work on the new Sgt. Elbert Kinser Bridge on State Route 107 in Tusculum is progressing at an impressive clip. "Remarkable progress is being made" on building the new span, which replaces the existing bridge washed away during catastrophic Nolichucky River flooding on Sept. 27, 2024, Tennessee Department of Transportation spokesman Mark Nagi said. The "bridge deck pour" phase of the ambitious construction project is expected to take place over the next few weeks, Nagi said Thursday.

A Greeneville woman who had allegedly taken THC gummies and was involved in a two-vehicle collision Wednesday night was charged by police with two counts of reckless endangerment and vehicular assault. Melissa D. Dalton, 41, of 55 Bird Drive, was charged with the offenses following the crash about 8:50 p.m. Wednesday at a red light in front of the Publix supermarket in the 2300 block of East Andrew Johnson Highway.

A judge has dismissed a petition for post conviction relief for Vonda Star Smith, convicted in 2018 by a Greene County Criminal Court jury of first- and second-degree murder in connection with the death of a 21-year-old woman and her unborn child. Smith, 59, formerly of Afton, is serving a life prison sentence for the 2016 death of Jessie Nicole Morrison, the mother of Smith's grandson.
